Notes from the North

A little walk through Sweden

Water is a precious commodity. You know this in theory, but it becomes even clearer when it’s hard to find some. The last thing I thought I’d have to worry about is water in Sweden. But the landscape seems really dry. Many small streams have simply dried up, so you have to be somewhat strategic with your water consumption and think carefully about where you can find some again.

At the shelter last night there was no water, but I found a small stream not too far away. I knew there was no water at the next shelter either, but there should be a tap where you could fill your bottles about three or four kilometres from the finish. When I got there and asked where the tap was, there was only a grumpy man who said he didn’t sell any water. Well! He wasn’t much help. I kept looking and found the tap, but alas, the water was still closed for the winter. So now it was a matter of finding water. It wasn’t that easy and I thought that it’s quite unusual for the ground to be so dry at this time of year. Isn’t it almost unheard of to be able to kneel in moss without getting wet knees. Well, at present it’s easily done. I wonder if this is a sign of how things are developing climatically?

Eventually, I found a decent water hole so I had water for both dinner and a cup of tea by the fire. It wasn’t bad at all.
